Gearbox, transfer case, differential and clutch parts for Land Rover 4x4 drivetrains.
Gearbox: Automatic.
Drivetrain: Permanent four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case. Most vehicles use all-round air suspension and Terrain Response; the coil-sprung base model used conventional steel springs and did without Terrain Response.
A drone or whine at constant speed can come from dry differential bearings. Silver particles in the drained oil mean the diff is wearing.
Rear differentials and front differentials are also requested on higher-mileage vehicles that have towed or done a lot of gravel driving, and a whine or drone at constant speed is usually the first warning.
Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Discovery 3. See gearboxes for sale or transfer cases for sale .
Some automatic gearboxes were described as filled for life, but many transmission specialists recommend changing the fluid and filter, particularly on vehicles that tow, off-road or operate in heat. Use only the fluid specified for your gearbox.
It splits drive between the front and rear axles. On models with a two-speed transfer case, it also provides a low-range gear set for steep terrain, towing boats up slipways and slow technical driving.
For how these parts work and the signs of wear, read the Land Rover transmission guide.
