What is specific to the Discovery 3

The Discovery 3 was sold in South Africa with 3 different engines. Internal parts, gaskets, timing components and sensors are specific to each, so the engine code decides the part before anything else.

Have this ready when you enquire

  • The 17-character VIN from your licence document, which identifies your exact L319 (sold here 2005–2009) and its build.
  • The engine code or number, because this model was sold with the 2.7 TDV6 turbodiesel, V6 petrol and V8 petrol.
  • A photo of the old part or its part number, if you can get to it.
Engine Code / family Fuel
2.7 TDV6 turbodiesel TDV6 Diesel
V6 petrol — Petrol
V8 petrol — Petrol

Known Discovery 3 engine parts faults

TDV6 crankshaft main bearing failure

Land Rover V6 diesels made before 2012 can suffer crankshaft main bearing failure. In a 2015 IOL report Jaguar Land Rover South Africa confirmed the Discovery 3 was among the affected models, and one owner was quoted R260,000 to repair a 2008 Discovery 3.

Split main intercooler hose

A split in the large intercooler hose on the TDV6 loses boost pressure and puts the vehicle into restricted performance, usually with black smoke. Oil on the outside of the hose is a clue.

Engine Parts

Parts commonly needed for the Discovery 3

TDV6 owners regularly need EGR valves, intercooler hoses, turbochargers and cooling parts, and a TDV6 with a failed bottom end often becomes a replacement engine enquiry.

Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Discovery 3. See cylinder heads for sale or turbochargers for sale .

Discovery 3 engine parts questions

Why does my Discovery 3 TDV6 lose power and blow black smoke?

Common causes are faulty EGR valves or a split main intercooler hose, both of which upset the air-fuel mixture. Inspect the large hose that runs down to the bottom of the intercooler for oil on the outside or a split. The Discovery 3 has two EGR valves and they tend to fail close together.

How do I know which engine my Land Rover has?

Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.

Should I repair my Land Rover engine or replace it with a complete unit?

It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.
