Understanding Timing Belts
A timing belt is a toothed rubber belt that drives the camshafts from the crankshaft. Belts wear with age and heat as well as distance, so they must be replaced on a schedule, together with their tensioner and idler pulleys.
In the Land Rover range, the 300Tdi, the 2.2 Td4 and SD4 diesels in Freelander 2 and early Evoque, and the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesels (TDV6 and SDV6) use timing belts. Some engines have more than one belt, for example a separate belt driving the high-pressure fuel pump, so check which belts your engine's service schedule includes.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover timing belts
When should I replace the timing belt on my Land Rover?
Follow the interval in the service schedule for your engine, which is given in both distance and years. If you have just bought a used Land Rover with no proof of a belt change, treat it as due. Towing, heat and dusty conditions are hard on belts, so do not stretch the interval.
What should a Land Rover timing belt kit include?
At minimum, the belt, the tensioner and the idler pulleys. Many owners also replace the water pump at the same time if it is driven by or sits behind the timing belt, along with any seals that are leaking onto the belt.
What happens if the timing belt breaks?
On an interference diesel, a broken belt normally bends valves and can damage pistons and the head, turning a routine service item into a major repair.
Is a timing belt a DIY job on a Land Rover V6 diesel?
It needs engine-specific locking tools and good access, and on some models the front of the vehicle has to be partly dismantled. Unless you have the tools and workshop information, have it done by a workshop that knows these engines.
