What is specific to the Freelander 2

Gearbox: 6-speed automatic.

Drivetrain: On-demand all-wheel drive through a Haldex coupling ahead of the rear differential, with Terrain Response and hill descent control.

Have this ready when you enquire

  • The 17-character VIN from your licence document, which identifies your exact L359 (sold here 2007–2015) and its build.
  • The gearbox type: 6-speed automatic.
  • Which engine it is paired with (3.2 i6 straight-six petrol, 2.2 TD4 turbodiesel, 2.2 SD4 turbodiesel and 2.0 Si4 turbo petrol), as that changes the gearbox and driveline parts.
  • A photo of the old part or its part number, if you can get to it.

Known Freelander 2 transmission faults

Rear differential pinion bearing whine

A whine, hum or drone from the rear is a common fault on pre-2011 Freelander 2s. Land Rover issued a technical bulletin (SSM46477) describing pinion tail bearing spalling, and UK specialist K Motors says the bearing was over-tightened at manufacture. Rule out a rear wheel bearing first.

Haldex coupling pump failure

A faulty Haldex pump shows as a traction control light and a "Traction Reduced" message, dropping the car to front-wheel drive. Read the fault codes before buying parts.

Transfer Case Parts

Parts commonly needed for the Freelander 2

Freelander 2 parts needs centre on the rear driveline: rear differentials (ideally rebuilt with heavy-duty bearings), Haldex pumps and couplings, plus propshaft bearings. Tell us which engine you have and the model year, because the Haldex unit changed during production. When a rear differential is replaced, specialists recommend also dealing with the Haldex unit, because fitting a new differential to a worn coupling can lead to a repeat failure.

Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Freelander 2. See gearboxes for sale or transfer cases for sale .

Freelander 2 transmission questions

Should I replace the Haldex unit when I replace the Freelander 2 rear differential?

Differential specialists recommend it, because Land Rover attributed rear diff bearing damage to the way the Haldex coupling applies torque when pulling away and manoeuvring, and fitting a new differential to an old coupling can lead to a repeat failure. Vehicles from the 2009 model year use a modified, fourth-generation Haldex coupling.

Do Land Rover automatic gearboxes need fluid changes?

Some automatic gearboxes were described as filled for life, but many transmission specialists recommend changing the fluid and filter, particularly on vehicles that tow, off-road or operate in heat. Use only the fluid specified for your gearbox.

What does a transfer case do?

It splits drive between the front and rear axles. On models with a two-speed transfer case, it also provides a low-range gear set for steep terrain, towing boats up slipways and slow technical driving.
