Understanding Range Rover Sport (L320) Brake Pads

Brake pads are the friction blocks that the calipers press against the brake discs. Most Land Rovers from the Discovery 3 onwards use electronic pad wear sensors that turn on a warning light when the pads are nearly worn, and the sensor usually needs replacing with the pads.

Pad choice matters on a heavy 4x4. Pads designed for the vehicle's weight resist fade on long descents and when towing, while very soft pads can wear quickly and hard pads can be noisy or wear discs faster.

Common Questions About Range Rover Sport (L320) brake pads

Do I need a new brake pad wear sensor?

Usually yes. On most modern Land Rovers the sensor is designed to wear through with the pad, so once the warning light has come on, the sensor needs replacing. Even if it has not triggered, a new sensor is cheap insurance when fitting new pads.

Why do my new Land Rover brake pads squeal?

Common causes are a glazed disc, missing or dry anti-squeal shims, lack of high-temperature grease on the pad contact points, or a pad compound that does not suit the disc. Bedding in new pads correctly also helps. Persistent noise should be checked, as it can also mean a sticking caliper.

Can I fit front pads only?

Yes. Front and rear pads wear at different rates, and fronts usually go first. What matters is replacing both sides of the same axle together.

Are rear pads harder to change on newer Land Rovers?

On models with electric parking brake motors in the rear calipers, you need a diagnostic tool to put the parking brake into service mode before retracting the pistons. Forcing the pistons back without doing this can damage the caliper motor.
