Understanding Range Rover Sport (L320) Electronic Parking Brake
An electronic parking brake (EPB) replaces the handbrake lever with a switch. Land Rover has used two main designs. On Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and the first Range Rover Sport, an electric parking brake module mounted underneath the vehicle pulls cables to the parking brake shoes inside the rear discs. On many newer Land Rovers, the parking brake is applied by electric motors fitted directly to the rear calipers.
Parking brake module faults are a common complaint on Discovery 3 and 4. Water getting into the module, seized cables and worn shoes can all trigger a parking brake fault message.

Common Questions About Range Rover Sport (L320) electronic parking brake
How do I release a stuck electronic parking brake on a Discovery 3 or 4?
These models have an emergency release procedure described in the owner's handbook. Follow the handbook for your model rather than forcing anything, and have the fault diagnosed afterwards.
Is it the parking brake module or the shoes?
It can be either, or the cables in between. Read the fault codes with a diagnostic tool first. If the module motor runs but the vehicle does not hold, check the shoes and cables. If the module does not respond, check its power supply and connector before replacing it.
Does a replacement parking brake module need calibrating?
Yes. After fitting a new module, or new shoes, the parking brake needs to be calibrated with a diagnostic tool so it applies and releases correctly.
Can I convert my Land Rover to a manual handbrake?
Conversions exist, but they change a safety system and may affect roadworthiness, insurance and warning lights. Repairing the original system is the safer route.
