What is specific to the Discovery 2

Air suspension is fitted to most, but not all, Discovery 2 vehicles. Drivetrain and suspension: Permanent four-wheel drive with high and low range and a centre differential lock; beam axles with coil springs, and self-levelling rear air suspension on many vehicles. Check which system your vehicle has before ordering, because a steel-sprung vehicle needs conventional suspension parts instead.

See Discovery 2 suspension for that side of the system.

Have this ready when you enquire

  • The 17-character VIN from your licence document, which identifies your exact Series II (L318) (sold here 1999–2004) and its build.
  • The exact derivative, for example Td5 GS, Td5 ES Auto and V8 ES Auto, as listed on your licence document.
  • Whether the vehicle is on air or steel springs (air suspension is recorded for this model).
  • A photo of the old part or its part number, if you can get to it.

Known Discovery 2 air suspension faults

Rear air suspension springs and compressor

The rear air springs perish at the crease and leak, which overworks the compressor until it fails. Compressors also fail from water ingress when the filter is not changed on schedule.

Air Suspension Compressors

Parts commonly needed for the Discovery 2

Discovery 2 orders are dominated by suspension: rear air springs and compressors, or coil conversion parts, plus front springs, shocks, bushes and swivel components. Many owners also convert failed rear air suspension to coil springs, which needs a matching set of springs, shocks and fitting parts rather than a single component, so tell us which way you want to go.

Discovery 2 air suspension questions

What is the most common air suspension problem on Land Rovers?

Air leaks are the root of most failures. A leak from an air spring, air line or valve block makes the compressor run much more than it should, until the compressor wears out or overheats. When a compressor fails, find and fix the leak as well, or the new compressor will go the same way.

Why does my Discovery or Range Rover drop overnight?

A corner that sinks while parked usually has a leak in its air spring, air line or the valve block. If the whole vehicle drops evenly, the valve block or a common line is more likely. Spraying soapy water on the springs and fittings with the vehicle raised can reveal where the leak is.
