Clogged throttle body on the 3.0 diesel
The throttle body on 3.0 diesel Discovery models is known to clog and cause a restricted performance message. Left alone, it can stop DPF regeneration and lead to a DPF full warning.
Discovery · L462 · 2017–present
Internal and external engine parts for Land Rover diesel and petrol engines, from the 300Tdi and Td5 to the TDV6, SDV6, SDV8 and Ingenium units.
The Discovery 5 was sold in South Africa with 3 different engines. Internal parts, gaskets, timing components and sensors are specific to each, so the engine code decides the part before anything else.
| Engine | Code / family | Fuel |
|---|---|---|
| Td6 3.0 V6 turbodiesel | — | Diesel |
| Si6 3.0 supercharged V6 petrol | — | Petrol |
| D300 3.0 six-cylinder turbodiesel (later models) | — | Diesel |
The throttle body on 3.0 diesel Discovery models is known to clog and cause a restricted performance message. Left alone, it can stop DPF regeneration and lead to a DPF full warning.
Leaking gaskets or cracked plastic inlet manifolds are another cause of restricted performance on the 3.0 diesel, especially when the fault appears under load.
The 3.0 V6 diesel uses a timing belt that must be replaced on schedule; a snapped belt lets the pistons strike the valves.
An NCC-published recall covers selected Discoverys sold from March 2024 to April 2026 with the AJ20-D6 engine, where the auxiliary belt idler pulley can damage the oil pressure sensor. Dealers fix it free.
This is recall work, done free at Land Rover dealers. Check your VIN with a dealer before buying parts for it.
Discovery 5 owners mostly buy diesel intake and emissions parts: throttle bodies, intake manifolds, NOx sensors, AdBlue components, DPFs and EGR parts, plus timing belt kits for the 3.0 V6 diesel. Owners of late vehicles with the AJ20-D6 diesel should confirm with a dealer whether the idler pulley recall has been done before ordering oil pressure sensors or chasing an oil leak, because the recall repair is free.
Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Discovery 5. See engines for sale , cylinder heads for sale or turbochargers for sale .
Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.
It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.
Share the VIN and engine number and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting.
