2.0 Ingenium diesel timing chain failure
A well-known problem on 2.0 Ingenium diesels, linked to oil dilution from incomplete DPF regenerations and the chain and guide design. A cold-start rattle is the warning; a failed chain can wreck the engine.
Discovery · L550 · 2015–present
Internal and external engine parts for Land Rover diesel and petrol engines, from the 300Tdi and Td5 to the TDV6, SDV6, SDV8 and Ingenium units.
The Discovery Sport was sold in South Africa with 5 different engines. Internal parts, gaskets, timing components and sensors are specific to each, so the engine code decides the part before anything else.
| Engine | Code / family | Fuel |
|---|---|---|
| 2.2 TD4 turbodiesel | — | Diesel |
| 2.2 SD4 turbodiesel | — | Diesel |
| 2.0 Si4 turbo petrol | — | Petrol |
| D180 2.0 turbodiesel | Ingenium | Diesel |
| 2.0 turbo petrol, 183kW | Ingenium | Petrol |

Turbos on 2.0 diesel Discovery Sports are known to fail, with loss of power, a warning light and sometimes blue smoke or a whistling noise. Oil contamination must be cleared or a new turbo can fail too.
The 2.2 diesel uses a timing belt. Missing the replacement interval risks the pistons hitting the valves and an uneconomical engine repair.
For the Discovery Sport, engine and emissions parts lead: timing chain kits for the 2.0 diesel, timing belt kits for the 2.2, turbochargers, EGR valves, DPFs and NOx sensors. Owners who bought a 2.0 diesel Discovery Sport second-hand should also ask about the timing chain service history, because a chain kit ordered before failure costs far less than a replacement engine after it.
Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Discovery Sport. See engines for sale or cylinder heads for sale .
Turbo failures on the 2.0 diesel are documented by JLR specialists, often with loss of power, a warning light and sometimes blue smoke or a whistling noise. Oil contamination can cause a replacement turbo to fail too, so the oil feed should be flushed and at-risk parts such as feed pipes and intercoolers checked when a new turbo is fitted.
Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.
It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.
For how these parts work and the signs of wear, read the Land Rover engine parts guide.
Share the VIN and engine number and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting.
