2.0 diesel timing chain failure
Independent JLR specialists list timing chain failure among common Velar problems on the 2.0 diesel, linked to oil dilution and chain guide wear.

Internal and external engine parts for Land Rover diesel and petrol engines, from the 300Tdi and Td5 to the TDV6, SDV6, SDV8 and Ingenium units.
The Range Rover Velar was sold in South Africa with 4 different engines. Internal parts, gaskets, timing components and sensors are specific to each, so the engine code decides the part before anything else.
| Engine | Code / family | Fuel |
|---|---|---|
| D180 / D240 2.0 turbodiesel | Ingenium | Diesel |
| D300 3.0 V6 turbodiesel | — | Diesel |
| P250 / P300 2.0 turbo petrol | Ingenium | Petrol |
| P380 3.0 supercharged V6 petrol | — | Petrol |

Turbocharger failure is a documented fault on diesel Velars, with loss of power and an engine warning light.
Three-litre diesel Velars are known to suffer clogged throttle bodies and cracked brittle-plastic inlet manifolds, both triggering restricted performance messages.
An NCC-published recall covers selected Velars sold from March 2024 to April 2026 with the AJ20-D6 engine, where the auxiliary belt idler pulley can damage the oil pressure sensor. Dealers repair it free.
This is recall work, done free at Land Rover dealers. Check your VIN with a dealer before buying parts for it.
Velar owners most often need timing chain kits and turbochargers for the 2.0 diesel, throttle bodies, inlet manifolds and timing belt kits for the 3.0 diesel, and DPF, NOx sensor and AdBlue parts for both. Owners of late vehicles with the AJ20-D6 diesel should confirm with a dealer whether the idler pulley recall has been done before ordering oil pressure sensors or chasing an oil leak, because that repair is free.
Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Range Rover Velar. See engines for sale or cylinder heads for sale .
Clogged throttle bodies and leaking or cracked plastic inlet manifolds are known causes on the 3.0 diesel Velar. A clogged throttle body can also stop the DPF regenerating, which leads to a DPF full warning if left unresolved.
Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.
It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.
Share the VIN and engine number and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting.
