Understanding Pinion Gear

The pinion is the small gear at the front of the differential that takes drive from the propshaft and turns the crown wheel. It runs on pinion bearings and is sealed where the propshaft flange connects.

Pinion seals leak with age, heat and after water crossings, and worn pinion bearings cause whine and play at the propshaft flange. A pinion itself is only replaced together with its matched crown wheel.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover pinion gear

Is a leaking pinion seal urgent?

A slow weep can be monitored, but a steady leak will lower the oil level and damage the bearings and gears. Top up and repair it promptly.

Can I replace a pinion seal without rebuilding the diff?

Yes, but the pinion nut must be refitted correctly to keep the bearing preload right. Follow the procedure for your axle, as some designs use a crush sleeve.

Can I buy just the pinion gear?

No. The pinion is matched to its crown wheel and must be replaced as a set.

What should I send to order pinion parts?

The VIN, which axle, and the ratio if known.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
