Understanding Ring Gear

The term ring gear covers two different parts. In an axle, the ring gear, also called the crown wheel, is the large gear in the differential driven by the pinion. It is always sold and fitted as a matched crown wheel and pinion set. On the engine, the starter ring gear is the toothed ring around the flywheel or flexplate that the starter motor engages.

A damaged crown wheel usually shows up as whine or clunks from an axle, while a worn starter ring gear causes grinding when starting.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover ring gear

Can I replace just the crown wheel?

No. The crown wheel and pinion are machined and matched as a set, and must be replaced together and set up with the correct backlash and preload.

Do I need to know my axle ratio?

Yes. Both axles on a four-wheel-drive Land Rover must have the same ratio. Check the part number or count the teeth on the crown wheel and pinion.

Can a starter ring gear be replaced on its own?

On some flywheels the ring gear is a separate press-fit part; on others, especially dual-mass flywheels, the flywheel is replaced complete.

Who should set up a crown wheel and pinion?

A differential specialist. Incorrect setup causes noise and rapid wear.
