Oil leaks
CAR magazine describes oil leaks as a common L494 problem and advises checking seals and gaskets at every service.

Internal and external engine parts for Land Rover diesel and petrol engines, from the 300Tdi and Td5 to the TDV6, SDV6, SDV8 and Ingenium units.
The Range Rover Sport (L494) was sold in South Africa with 5 different engines. Internal parts, gaskets, timing components and sensors are specific to each, so the engine code decides the part before anything else.
| Engine | Code / family | Fuel |
|---|---|---|
| 3.0 SDV6 turbodiesel | SDV6 | Diesel |
| 4.4 SDV8 turbodiesel | SDV8 | Diesel |
| 3.0 SCV6 supercharged petrol | — | Petrol |
| 5.0 supercharged V8 petrol (SVR) | — | Petrol |
| 3.0 six-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol (P360, HST; later models) | — | Petrol hybrid |

Turbocharger failure is named in the local buying guide, and turbo replacement on the diesels is a recognised specialist repair.
On the L494, owners most often ask for air suspension parts, turbochargers, water pumps and radiators, oil leak gaskets and seals, and NOx sensors and DPFs for the diesels. Give us the VIN and engine, because SDV6, SDV8 and supercharged versions use different parts. When a turbocharger fails, specialists recommend checking and cleaning the oil feed and replacing contaminated parts such as the intercooler and feed pipes, so a turbo enquiry often grows into a small parts list rather than a single item.
Replacing the whole unit? A complete unit may cost less than rebuilding one on an older Range Rover Sport (L494). See engines for sale or cylinder heads for sale .
Start with the VIN on your licence disc and in the windscreen corner. The vehicle's registration papers, the service book and the engine number stamped on the block also identify it. Model names alone are not enough: a Discovery 4, for example, came with different diesel and petrol engines, and a Defender could have a 300Tdi, Td5 or Puma diesel depending on its year. Send the VIN with your quote request so the part can be matched to the engine code.
It depends on what failed. A leaking gasket, a worn timing kit or a faulty injector is a repair job. Bottom-end damage, such as a spun bearing or a broken crankshaft on a V6 diesel, often makes a complete replacement engine more practical than a rebuild, because the block, crank and turbo may all need attention. Get a proper diagnosis first, then compare the cost of a rebuild kit plus machining against a complete engine.
Share the VIN and engine number and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting.
