Understanding ABS Module
The anti-lock braking system (ABS) uses wheel speed sensors and a hydraulic modulator to stop the wheels locking under hard braking. On Land Rovers the same hardware also runs traction control, hill descent control and stability control, so an ABS fault can switch off several systems at once.
On the Discovery 2, a fault often lights the ABS, traction control and hill descent warning lights together. Wheel speed sensors, their wiring and the modulator are the usual suspects, and mud and water from off-road driving make sensor problems more likely.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover ABS module
Why are all my warning lights on at once?
On many Land Rovers, ABS, traction control and hill descent control share the same sensors and module. A single faulty wheel speed sensor can disable all of them. Read the fault codes before replacing anything.
Is it the wheel speed sensor or the ABS module?
Wheel speed sensors and their wiring fail far more often than the module. Clean the sensor and its reluctor ring, check the wiring and connector, and test the sensor's output before looking at the modulator.
Does a replacement ABS module need coding?
Often yes. Many modern ABS modules must be coded to the vehicle and may need bleeding with a diagnostic tool. Check this with your workshop before buying a used unit.
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
The normal brakes should still work, but ABS, traction and stability control may not. Drive carefully, avoid hard braking on loose or wet surfaces, and have it diagnosed promptly.
