Understanding Brake Shoes
Brake shoes are curved friction linings that press outwards against the inside of a drum. On Land Rovers they are mostly used for the parking brake: in the transmission handbrake drum on classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2, and inside the rear discs on Discovery 3, Discovery 4 and the first Range Rover Sport, where they are applied by the electronic parking brake module.
Because parking brake shoes are used gently, they often last a long time, but they can seize, contaminate with oil, or wear quickly if the parking brake drags while driving.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover brake shoes
Why do Discovery 3 and 4 parking brake shoes wear out?
If the electronic parking brake does not fully release, or the vehicle is driven with it partly applied, the shoes wear and overheat inside the rear discs. Corrosion on the shoes and hardware also causes problems on vehicles that stand for long periods.
Do I need to release the parking brake module before changing the shoes?
Yes. On models with an electronic parking brake module, it must be put into the correct mode or released using the manufacturer's procedure before the rear discs come off. Afterwards, calibrate the system with a diagnostic tool.
Should I replace springs and hardware with brake shoes?
Yes. Springs weaken and adjusters corrode, and a fitting kit costs little compared with the labour of doing the job twice.
Can oil-soaked brake shoes be cleaned?
No. Linings absorb oil and will not grip properly again. Replace them and fix the source of the leak.
