Understanding Brake Fluid
Brake fluid transfers the force from the pedal to the calipers. It absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and allows corrosion inside calipers, lines and ABS units.
Use the brake fluid specification printed on your Land Rover's reservoir cap or in the owner's handbook, and change it at the interval in the service schedule. Old fluid is a common reason for brake fade on long mountain descents, when the fluid boils and the pedal goes soft.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover brake fluid
What brake fluid does my Land Rover need?
Check the reservoir cap and the owner's handbook for the specified DOT rating. Do not mix fluid types, and never use DOT 5 silicone fluid in a system designed for glycol-based fluid.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Follow the interval in your Land Rover's service schedule, which is usually set by time rather than distance because fluid absorbs moisture even when the vehicle is not driven much.
Why is my brake fluid level dropping?
The level falls slowly as pads wear, which is normal. A noticeable drop between checks points to a leak at a caliper, line, hose or master cylinder, and should be checked before the vehicle is driven further.
Can I change brake fluid myself on a Land Rover with ABS?
A basic fluid change through the bleed nipples is possible, but if air gets into the ABS unit, some models need a diagnostic tool to cycle the ABS pump during bleeding. If you are not sure, have a workshop do it.
