Understanding Brake Booster
The brake servo, or booster, uses vacuum to multiply the force from your foot so a heavy Land Rover stops without huge pedal effort. Diesel engines do not produce enough intake vacuum on their own, so they use a mechanical vacuum pump. On some engines, such as the Td5, that vacuum pump is mounted on the back of the alternator.
When the servo or its vacuum supply fails, the brakes still work, but the pedal becomes very hard and stopping distances increase.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover brake booster
Is it the servo or the vacuum pump?
Check the vacuum supply first. A split vacuum hose or failing vacuum pump gives the same hard pedal as a failed servo. A workshop can test vacuum at the servo inlet to tell them apart.
Is it safe to drive with a failed brake servo?
The brakes still work, but you need much more pedal pressure and stopping distances are longer, especially in a heavy vehicle. Have it repaired before driving further.
What else should I check when replacing a brake servo?
Check the vacuum hose and non-return valve, the vacuum pump, and the master cylinder seals. If the master cylinder has leaked fluid into the servo, replace both.
What do I need to order a Land Rover brake servo or vacuum pump?
Send the VIN and engine code, and say whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive. For vacuum pumps, give the engine code, since they differ between engines.
