Understanding Master Cylinder
The brake master cylinder converts pedal pressure into hydraulic pressure. It sits at the front of the brake servo with the fluid reservoir on top, and it feeds two separate circuits so the vehicle can still stop if one circuit fails.
Master cylinder seals wear internally, allowing fluid to bypass the pistons. The classic sign is a pedal that slowly sinks while you hold steady pressure at a traffic light.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover master cylinder
How do I know if it is the master cylinder or air in the brakes?
Air in the system usually gives a spongy pedal that firms up when pumped. A failing master cylinder tends to give a pedal that sinks slowly under steady pressure. Check for external leaks first, then have the system tested.
Should I replace the reservoir with the master cylinder?
Reuse the reservoir if it is clean, uncracked and its seals are good. Fit new reservoir grommets, since old ones often leak once disturbed.
Does a new master cylinder need bench bleeding?
Yes. Bench bleeding it before fitting reduces the air that enters the system. Then bleed all four wheels, and use a diagnostic tool for the ABS unit if your model requires it.
What details do I need to order a master cylinder?
Send the VIN, model and year, and state whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive and manual or automatic. Classic Defender master cylinders changed across production years.
