Understanding Coolant Reservoirs
The coolant expansion tank, or header tank, holds extra coolant and allows for expansion as the engine heats up. It is pressurised and carries the pressure cap, and many Land Rover tanks have a level sensor that triggers a low coolant warning.
Most Land Rover expansion tanks are plastic. With years of heat cycles, they discolour, crack along seams and seep around the outlets, which is a common cause of slow coolant loss.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover coolant reservoirs
Why does my Land Rover expansion tank keep cracking?
Heat and pressure cycles make plastic brittle over time. A pressure cap that does not release correctly, or combustion gases entering the cooling system, can also over-pressurise the tank.
Should I replace the cap with the tank?
Yes. A new cap ensures the system holds the correct pressure and is inexpensive compared with the risk of overheating.
Is the level sensor included?
It depends on the part. Some tanks come with the sensor fitted, and others need the old sensor transferred. Check the listing.
What should I send to order an expansion tank?
The VIN and engine code.
