Understanding Radiator Caps

On most Land Rovers the pressure cap sits on the expansion tank rather than the radiator. It holds the cooling system at a set pressure, which raises the coolant's boiling point, and releases excess pressure through a valve.

Cap seals harden and springs weaken over time. A cap that no longer holds pressure lets coolant boil and escape, and one that sticks can over-pressurise hoses and the tank.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover radiator caps

How can I tell if my expansion tank cap is faulty?

A workshop can pressure-test the cap to check it opens at the right pressure. Look for a hard, flattened or cracked seal as a visual clue.

Can I fit any cap that fits the thread?

No. The pressure rating must match your system. The wrong cap can cause overheating or damage.

Is it safe to open the cap when the engine is hot?

No. Wait until the engine has cooled. Hot, pressurised coolant can spray out and cause serious burns.

What should I send to order a cap?

The VIN or a photo of the existing cap showing any markings.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
