Understanding Fan Clutches

A viscous fan coupling connects a belt-driven cooling fan to the engine. It uses silicone fluid that thickens as it heats up, so the fan spins faster when the engine needs more cooling and slips when it does not. Older Land Rovers, such as the classic Defender, and some larger engines use viscous fans.

When the coupling loses fluid or wears, the fan slips too much and the engine overheats at low speeds, which is exactly when a 4x4 crawling off-road or towing needs it most.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover fan clutches

How do I test a viscous fan coupling?

With the engine off and hot, carefully try to turn the fan by hand. It should resist. If it spins freely, the coupling is likely worn. Never do this with the engine running.

Should I replace the fan blade with the coupling?

Check the blades for cracks or missing tips. A damaged fan should be replaced, as it can fly apart.

Do I need special tools to remove a viscous fan?

Many viscous fans use a large nut that needs a thin fan spanner and a tool to hold the pulley. Some have a left-hand thread. Check the procedure for your engine.

What should I send to order a viscous coupling?

The VIN and engine code.

Not sure which part fits?
