Understanding ECU/PCM
The engine control unit (ECU) manages fuel injection, timing, turbo boost and emissions. Land Rovers also have many other modules, including body control, transmission, suspension, ABS and Terrain Response modules. On the Discovery 2, a body electrical control module (BeCM) runs many of the body functions.
Modules are linked to the vehicle's VIN and immobiliser, so a replacement, especially a used one, usually needs coding or programming before it will work. ECU faults are also often caused by wiring or power supply problems rather than the unit itself, so test first.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover ECU/PCM
Can I fit a used ECU to my Land Rover?
Often yes, but it usually needs to be coded to your vehicle's VIN and immobiliser. Without that, the engine may not start. Confirm with a workshop that can program your model before buying.
How do I know if the ECU is actually faulty?
Check power and earth supplies to the ECU, inspect the connectors for corrosion or oil, and rule out sensors and wiring. Many suspected ECU failures turn out to be wiring faults.
What is the BeCM on a Discovery 2?
The body electrical control module controls functions such as central locking, the alarm and immobiliser, and some lighting. It is mounted low inside the cabin, so water leaks into the footwell can damage it. Check for leaks before fitting a replacement.
What information do I need to order a Land Rover module?
The VIN and the part number on the module label. Software versions and hardware differ, and some parts are specific to engine, gearbox or market.
