Understanding Relays
Relays are electrically operated switches that let a small control signal switch a high-current circuit. On Land Rovers they control items such as the fuel pump, glow plugs, cooling fans, horn, lights and the air suspension compressor.
A relay that sticks closed can leave a component running when it should be off, while a relay that fails open stops the component working. A stuck air suspension compressor relay is a classic cause of a burnt-out compressor.

Common Questions About Land Rover relays
How do I test a relay?
Swap it with an identical relay from a non-essential circuit and see if the fault moves. For a proper test, check that the coil clicks when powered and that the contacts show continuity with a multimeter.
Why does a stuck relay matter on air suspension?
If the compressor relay sticks closed, the compressor can run continuously until it overheats and fails. When replacing an air suspension compressor, many workshops fit a new relay as a precaution.
Are Land Rover relays interchangeable?
Relays that look identical can have different current ratings or internal wiring. Match the part number or the diagram printed on the relay.
Should I carry spare relays?
For remote travel it is a sensible precaution to carry spares for critical circuits such as the fuel pump and glow plugs, along with a set of fuses.
