Understanding Ignition Coils
Ignition coils turn the 12V battery supply into the very high voltage needed to fire the spark plugs. Petrol Land Rovers use individual coil-on-plug units that sit directly on top of each spark plug.
Coils fail from heat, age and moisture. A failed coil causes a misfire on one cylinder, which should be fixed quickly because unburnt fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Diesel Land Rovers do not have ignition coils.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover ignition coils
How do I find which ignition coil has failed?
Read the misfire codes to identify the cylinder, then swap that coil with the one from a neighbouring cylinder. If the misfire follows the coil, the coil is faulty. If it stays, check the spark plug and injector for that cylinder.
Should I replace all the ignition coils at once?
It is not essential. Many owners replace only the failed coil. On high-mileage engines where coils are the same age, replacing the set can prevent repeat failures, but it is a cost decision.
Can a bad coil damage my catalytic converter?
Yes. A misfiring cylinder sends unburnt fuel into the exhaust, which can overheat the catalytic converter. Avoid driving hard with a flashing engine light.
Do diesel Land Rovers have ignition coils?
No. Diesels have no spark ignition, so there are no coils or spark plugs. They use glow plugs for cold starting.
