Understanding Ball Joints

Ball joints are pivots that let the suspension and steering move while holding the wheel in place. Independent-suspension Land Rovers have ball joints on the upper and lower arms. The classic Defender and Discovery 1 and 2 use a different design at the front axle: a swivel housing that turns on swivel pin bearings inside a chrome swivel ball.

Worn joints cause knocks and vague steering, and a failed ball joint can let the wheel collapse, so any looseness should be fixed promptly.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover ball joints

Can I replace just the ball joint on a Discovery or Range Rover arm?

It depends on the arm. Some ball joints can be pressed out and replaced, while others are integral to the arm, so the whole arm must be replaced. Check the part for your VIN before ordering.

What are Defender swivel pin bearings?

On classic Defenders and Discovery 1 and 2, the front hub turns on a swivel housing that pivots on upper and lower swivel pin bearings. If the steering feels heavy or vague, or the swivel seal leaks, the bearings and seal may need replacing. Pitted chrome swivel balls wear the seal quickly and should be replaced too.

How do I check for a worn ball joint?

Lift the wheel off the ground, grip it at the top and bottom, and rock it. Movement at the joint, rather than at the wheel bearing, suggests wear. A workshop can confirm it with a pry bar and the vehicle on a lift.

Do I need an alignment after replacing a ball joint?

It is recommended. Replacing joints can alter wheel geometry, and an alignment protects your tyres.
