Understanding Sway Bar

Anti-roll bars, also called sway or stabiliser bars, link the suspension on the left and right sides to reduce body roll in corners. Tall, heavy Land Rovers rely on them for stable handling on tar.

Some Land Rovers use active systems instead of plain bars. The Discovery 2 was offered with Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE), which uses hydraulic actuators on the anti-roll bars, and the first Range Rover Sport offered Dynamic Response, a similar active system. These systems add pumps, valves and sensors that can fail with age.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover sway bar

Should I disconnect my anti-roll bar for off-road driving?

Some off-road setups use disconnecting bars to gain articulation on slow, technical tracks. They must be reconnected for road driving, because handling on tar is noticeably worse without them.

What is ACE on a Discovery 2?

Active Cornering Enhancement uses hydraulic rams on the front and rear anti-roll bars to reduce body roll. Leaks, a failing pump or faulty sensors can cause warning lights. Some owners convert to conventional bars when repairs are uneconomical, but that changes how the vehicle handles.

Should I replace anti-roll bar bushes with the drop links?

They wear together, and replacing both removes all the common sources of clunks from the bar in one job.

How do I order the right anti-roll bar?

Send the VIN and say whether the vehicle has ACE or Dynamic Response, as bars for active systems differ from standard bars.
