Understanding Bonnet

The bonnet covers the engine bay and is held by hinges, a catch and, on many models, gas struts. Many Land Rover bonnets are aluminium, including the classic Defender's flat bonnet, which on some vehicles also carries the spare wheel. Newer Range Rover and Discovery bonnets are large, curved panels with complex insulation and washer jets.

Aluminium bonnets dent easily and corrode at the hinges and edges where they meet steel parts. Weak gas struts can let a heavy bonnet drop unexpectedly.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover bonnet

Why won't my bonnet release?

A stretched or broken release cable, or a seized catch, is the usual cause. Lubricate the catch regularly, especially on vehicles used in dust and mud.

Can I carry a spare wheel on my Defender bonnet?

Some Defenders were fitted with a bonnet-mounted spare wheel. The bonnet needs the right mounting points and hinges to carry the weight, and it can affect forward visibility.

Should I replace the gas struts with the bonnet?

If they are weak, yes. They are inexpensive, and a new bonnet with tired struts can fall and injure someone.

What should I send to order a bonnet?

The VIN, paint code, and whether you need the insulation pad, washer jets and badges.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
