Understanding Tailgate & Rear Door
Land Rovers use several rear opening designs. The classic Defender station wagon and Discovery 1 and 2 have a side-hinged rear door that usually carries the spare wheel. Full-size Range Rovers use a split tailgate with an upper glass section and a lower drop-down tailgate. Most other modern Land Rovers use a one-piece, top-hinged tailgate, often power-operated.
On side-hinged rear doors, the weight of the spare wheel strains the hinges and door frame. On powered tailgates, the struts, motors, latch and wiring harness are common failure points.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover tailgate & rear door
Why is my Defender or Discovery rear door sagging?
The spare wheel adds weight that wears hinges and stresses the door frame. Replacing hinges helps, and some owners move the spare wheel to a separate carrier to reduce the load.
Why won't my powered tailgate open fully?
Common causes are weak struts, a failing motor or spindle, a sticking latch or a broken wire in the tailgate harness. A diagnostic tool can show tailgate fault codes.
Can I replace just the upper glass section of a Range Rover split tailgate?
Yes, the upper and lower sections are separate. Check whether heating, wiper and wiring parts are included.
What should I send to order a tailgate or rear door?
The VIN, paint code and whether the tailgate is powered. For rear doors, mention the spare wheel carrier type.
