Understanding Exhaust Clamps

Exhaust clamps hold pipe sections together at slip joints, while flange joints use bolts and gaskets. Band clamps give a better seal than U-bolt clamps and do less damage to the pipes.

Clamps rust and loosen over time, and are usually replaced whenever an exhaust section is changed.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover exhaust clamps

Should I use a band clamp or a U-bolt clamp?

Band clamps spread the load around the pipe and usually seal better without crushing it. U-bolt clamps are cheaper but can distort the pipe.

Can I reuse exhaust clamps?

Only if they are in good condition. Rusted or stretched clamps should be replaced with the new section.

What size clamp do I need?

Measure the outside diameter of the pipe at the joint, or send the VIN and joint position.

Why does my joint still leak after tightening the clamp?

The pipe ends may be corroded or out of shape, or the joint may need a new sealing ring or gasket. Replace the damaged section if necessary.
