Understanding Flex Pipe

A flexi pipe is a braided, flexible section in the exhaust that absorbs engine movement and vibration, stopping them cracking the manifold and pipes. On transversely mounted engines, such as those in the Freelander, Evoque and Discovery Sport, the engine rocks more, so the flexi joint works hard.

When the braid or inner liner splits, the exhaust starts to blow near the front of the vehicle, often with a buzzing noise.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover flex pipe

Can a flexi pipe be replaced on its own?

On some systems, a repair flexi section can be welded in. On others, the flexi is part of the front pipe or catalytic converter section. Welding in a repair section is common, but it must be aligned correctly.

What makes flexi pipes fail?

Age, heat, rust and excessive engine movement from worn engine mounts. Check the engine mounts when a flexi fails early.

Is a leaking flexi pipe dangerous?

It can let exhaust fumes collect under the vehicle and enter the cabin, and it can upset sensors downstream. Repair it promptly.

What should I send to order a flexi pipe?

The VIN, engine code and a photo showing where the flexi section sits.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
