Understanding Heat Shields
Heat shields are thin metal panels that protect the floor, fuel tank, wiring and other components from exhaust heat. On diesel Land Rovers, shields around the turbo, DPF and catalytic converter are especially important because those parts run very hot.
Heat shields rust at their mounting points and then rattle. Removing a shield to stop a rattle can expose nearby parts to damaging heat, so replace or re-secure it instead. Dry grass under a hot exhaust is also a fire risk when parking off-road.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover heat shields
Can I remove a rattling heat shield?
It is not recommended. The shield protects nearby parts from heat. Re-secure it with suitable clamps or fixings, or replace it.
Why does my heat shield rattle only at certain revs?
A loose shield vibrates when the engine or exhaust hits its natural frequency. Find the loose fixing and secure it.
Is a hot exhaust a fire risk off-road?
Yes. Avoid parking over long dry grass, and check that grass has not collected around the exhaust and heat shields after driving through veld.
What should I send to order a heat shield?
The VIN and the location of the shield, or a photo. Shields are specific to the engine and exhaust layout.
