Understanding Silencer (Muffler)

Silencers, also called mufflers or exhaust boxes, reduce exhaust noise using chambers and baffles. Most Land Rovers have a centre silencer and a rear silencer, and some models have more than one rear box.

Silencers rust from the inside because condensation collects in them, particularly on vehicles used for short trips. Once they rust through, the exhaust becomes loud and can blow fumes under the vehicle.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover silencer (muffler)

Should I replace the centre and rear silencers together?

Only if both are worn. If the rear silencer has rusted, check the centre silencer and pipes at the same time, since they are usually the same age.

Will a louder aftermarket silencer affect roadworthiness?

A very loud exhaust can fail a roadworthy test or attract attention from traffic officers. Choose a silencer designed to meet noise requirements.

What is the difference between a silencer and a resonator?

A silencer mainly reduces overall exhaust volume, while a resonator targets specific frequencies such as drone at cruising speed. Some systems use both.

What should I send to order a silencer?

The VIN, engine code and whether you need the centre or rear silencer.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
