Understanding Mid-Pipe

The mid-pipe, or intermediate pipe, runs under the vehicle between the front emissions equipment and the rear silencer. It may include a resonator or centre silencer, and it follows the chassis and floor pan closely.

On Defenders, the length of the mid-pipe depends on the wheelbase. Mid-pipes are exposed to water, mud and stones, and rust from the inside when the exhaust does not get hot enough to burn off condensation.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover mid-pipe

Is the mid-pipe the same as the centre silencer?

On many Land Rovers, the centre silencer or resonator is part of the intermediate pipe section, so they are replaced together.

Why does the mid-pipe rust first?

Condensation collects in the lower sections of the exhaust, and short trips do not heat it enough to evaporate. Water and road salt, where used, attack it from outside too.

Does the mid-pipe differ between Defender 90 and 110?

Yes. Wheelbase changes the length and layout of the exhaust, so give the wheelbase and engine when ordering.

What else should I replace with the mid-pipe?

Gaskets or clamps at both ends and the rubber mounts along its length.
