Understanding Y-Pipe

A Y-pipe joins exhaust gases from the two cylinder banks of a V6 or V8 engine into a single pipe, or splits a single pipe into two outlets further back. Land Rover V6 and V8 petrol engines, and some V-engine diesels, use Y-sections in their front pipes.

Y-pipes carry hot gas close to the engine, so they suffer from heat, cracking at welds and corroded flanges.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover y-pipe

Does my Land Rover have a Y-pipe?

Engines with two cylinder banks, such as the V6 and V8 engines, generally combine their exhaust at some point. Four- and five-cylinder engines do not need one. Check under the vehicle, or send the engine code.

Can a cracked Y-pipe be welded?

A small crack can sometimes be welded, but heat cycling tends to crack repairs again. Replacement is more reliable.

Why is there an oxygen sensor fault after an exhaust leak?

An exhaust leak ahead of an oxygen sensor can draw in air and give a false lean reading. Fix the leak before replacing the sensor.

What should I send to order a Y-pipe?

The VIN, engine code and a photo of the section.

Not sure which part fits?

Send your VIN or engine code and the SparesBoyz parts team will check fitment before quoting. Parts are couriered nationwide.
