Understanding Rocker Arms
Rocker arms and followers transfer the camshaft's movement to the valves. Older designs such as the 300Tdi use rockers on a shaft, while overhead-cam engines use roller finger followers with hydraulic lash adjusters that take up clearance automatically.
On the Td5, rockers also operate the unit injectors, so rocker wear can affect fuelling. A ticking top end on a Land Rover is often a worn follower or a hydraulic adjuster that is not holding oil pressure.

Questions
Common Questions About Land Rover rocker arms
Why is my Land Rover ticking on start-up?
A brief tick that disappears as oil pressure builds is often a hydraulic lash adjuster draining down while the vehicle stands. A tick that stays when the engine is warm points to a worn follower, rocker or cam lobe and should be checked, particularly if the oil is overdue.
Should I replace rockers and followers as a set?
If one is worn because of an oil problem, others are likely to be worn as well. A full set gives consistent results, and any damaged camshaft lobe should be addressed at the same time.
Do the 300Tdi rockers need adjusting?
Engines with solid tappets or adjustable rockers need the valve clearances checked at the intervals in the service schedule. Engines with hydraulic adjusters do not. Check which type your engine uses before starting work.
What should I replace with Land Rover rocker arms?
A rocker cover gasket, fresh oil and filter, and any hydraulic lash adjusters that are noisy or worn.
