Understanding Cylinder Heads

The cylinder head closes the top of the engine and carries the valves, camshafts or rockers, and on diesels the injectors and glow plugs. It also contains coolant passages, which is why overheating so often leads to a warped or cracked head.

Land Rover heads range from the single head on the 300Tdi, Td5 and Ingenium engines to the pair of heads on the V6 and V8 diesels. Buying a head means matching the exact engine code, since heads are not interchangeable across engine families.

Questions

Common Questions About Land Rover cylinder heads

How do I tell a cracked head from a blown head gasket?

The symptoms overlap: coolant loss, pressure in the cooling system and white smoke. A workshop can pressure-test the cooling system and do a combustion gas test, but the final answer usually comes from removing the head and having it crack-tested and checked for flatness at a machine shop.

Can a warped Land Rover cylinder head be skimmed?

Often, yes, if it is within the manufacturer's limits for material removal. Some heads can only be skimmed a small amount before valve-to-piston clearance becomes a problem, and a thicker head gasket may be needed. Your machine shop will advise based on the measurement.

What should I replace when fitting a Land Rover cylinder head?

Use a new head gasket, new head bolts if your engine uses stretch bolts, and new manifold gaskets. It is also sensible to renew the thermostat, flush the cooling system and, on a belt-driven engine, fit a new timing belt kit while it is apart.

Should I buy a bare head or a complete head?

A complete head with valves, springs and camshafts fitted saves labour and machine shop time. A bare head suits you if your own valves and cams are in good condition. Either way, give the engine code so the casting matches.
